The Kiwanis Club of Hicksville was chartered on June 18, 1937 and incorporated in 1951. The Kiwanis Foundation of Hicksville was incorporated in 1964. We continue to be an important part of our community.
One of the most visible contributions is the Kiwanis Fountain in Kennedy Park. Yet Kiwanis is more than that... it is about changing the lives of children. We award scholarships to deserving high school students who have made contributions to their school and community. Other programs in support of young people are the sponsorship of the Hicksville High School Key Club, support for Kamp Kiwanis and the support of a local Boy Scout Troop. Together with the Key Club and the Hicksville Public Schools we provide Thanksgiving Baskets to local families. We have partnered with Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Ignatius Human Services to develop a Three Kings Celebration on the feast of the Ephipany. We also run food drives to help fill various food banks throughout the area.
Community service requires many levels of commitment and community support. Events include our Pancake Breakfast, , Pasta Night, Raffles and Craft Sales. The monies raised from these events go to support the many charitable programs in which we participate.
In 1991 North Shore University Hospital and the New York District of Kiwanis International established the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center(KPTC). This is a complex program that draws on the vast resources of the hospital and Kiwanis to give seriously injured children the best available care in a family oriented environment. Our club has a major hand in is the annual Penny Auction in support of the Friends of KPTC. These funds provide for pediatric trauma kits for ambulance corps throughout Long Island. Because prevention is better than treatment KPTC has created training programs for emergency medical personnel, coaches, parents and others who are involved with children.
Late in the 1980s the Hicksville Club was the first to admit women as members. It took a while for district leaders to accept them but they did. Some of these women are still serving as members and have in the past been president, treasurer, etc. of the club. In fact many women now serve as officers at the district level.
