Kiwanis, as an organization, was founded in Detroit, Michigan, January 21,1915 by Joseph Prance. Its purpose was the mutual exchange of preferred treatment in professional and business dealings. The name Kiwanis was taken from an Native American term meaning "Self Expression". It also became obvious that the original purpose lacked the power to attract and hold members. The purpose of the organization was then changed to "community service," a concept from which the organization has never deviated.
The Hicksville Kiwanis club was started in 1937 by a group of concerned citizens who embraced the concept of "community service". They concentrated on creating services that would help the youth in the area and strengthen the ties that the businesses in the area had with the community of Hicksville. They would meet each week on Tuesday for Lunch to discuss and plan services to be carried out.
The current club is carrying on the traditions established some 85 years ago in Detroit, Michigan. We currently have creatd scholarships for graduating students, by celebrating 3 Kings Day in January, helping indigent people, and we work to recognize those persons who have contributed to the betterment of Hicksville.
In the past we have participated in the dispension of Flu shots. We have also donated car seats to single parents in need.
We have held the following events: the Pancake Breakfast, Pasta and Presley, Luck of the Irish, Golf Outing, and the Fall and Spring Garage Sales. We also sponsor 2 children to be sent to Kamp Kiwanis, this is a sleep away camp sponsored by New York State Kiwanis clubs, for 2 weeks in the summer. Every year there is a donation of Thanksgiving baskets, made up of turkey, canned vegetables and box stuffing, in conjunction with the Hicksville School District and the Hicksville Key Club. We also participate in the Adopt A Spot program. We are also committed to donating to the Hicksville Food Pantry.
